When the Past Whispers: Uncovering My True Calling
I have struggled to find “My Purpose,” or who I wanted to be when I grew up. I’ve always envied those who are crystal clear about who they would be and what they would do for a living. Guess what? I’m not one of those people, and I’ve spent much of my life lamenting that fact. The one question they always start with is, what did you like to do as a kid? What did you enjoy or pretend to do? This is of no help to me. I played Little House on the Prairie, Little Women, and Anne of Green Gables! I’m not sure what that was telling me to do or be—maybe move to a different period, be a writer, or perhaps a teacher, since they all had that in common.
My Love of History
My grandmother called me an “Old Soul,” saying I seemed to come from a different time. I was always looking back; I loved history, and I had a fascination with Abraham Lincoln for a period in my youth. Please feel free to share if you can figure out what that means. Needless to say, as a kid and teenager, I didn’t fit in! While everyone was getting their licenses and wanting cool hot rods, I was going to car shows, dreaming of a Ford pickup with the up-and-down grill, not the side-to-side. For those who are confused, that would be a 1946-1947 Jailbar Ford pickup. Yes, I now officially have my longed-for pickup!
Looking Forward
Well, enough of that! I will begin by stating that I am 54 and have finally figured out who I am and what I’ve always wanted to be! All the things I’ve tried over the years—failures and successes—never fulfilled me. The one thing I love is HOME, and everything related to it: gardening, children, pets, homeschooling, and yes, even beekeeping. So, why a blog and why now? I have the time and knowledge, and I want to know if anyone out there feels like I do. Join me with journey to rediscover homemaking.
The Plan
My journey through time will starting in June, I will create blog posts and possibly a podcast about homemaking through time. A few years back, I discovered this farm series created in Britain, hosted by Ruth Goodman. The series ranges from Tudor Monastery Farm to the WWII Farm. Whenever I’m stressed or want to clear my head and feel joy, I watch one of these series. In these shows, they go back in time and spend anywhere from six months to a whole year living and working in that period. I want to do that myself, but I don’t know where to do something like that in the US. This leaves me researching and adapting as much of an old-fashioned homemaking life as possible. I would also like to share some of what I’m doing and the research I come across. If you’re like me and love history, the feel of an old book, or if your favorite vacation spot is an antique shop, you might be in the right place. I hope if you’ve read this far you might be interested in rediscovering homemaking: a journey through time.
Why 1920
Over the next few months, I will discuss homemaking and homelife across various periods. I will start with the 1920s, when my grandmother was born. Each month, I will explore the 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s. We will cover homemaking, gardening, hobbies, children, and recipes. I want to start a podcast similar to the old radio shows from the early years. I will tell stories, read journals, and maybe share excerpts from books of the time, along with the music and other things I love about that era.
